The Minister of Education and Human Development, Carmelita Namashulua, has ordered the error-ridden Grade 6 social science textbook to be removed from all schools. “These are mistakes that shame us,” Minister Namashulua said, cited by Miramar. “These are unacceptable mistakes that not even a child could make.”
This obviates the previously announced compiling of an errata sheet to correct the errors contained in the manual. Miramar has established that more than 900 books have already been distributed. The exercise is now one of recall, adds the same source.
Namashulua, who was speaking during a visit to the Guebo Primary School this morning, also announced the suspension of the Director of the National Institute for the Development of Education (INDE), the entity responsible for the evaluation of textbooks. The School Book Evaluation Board has also been suspended.
The Minister of Education further announced that all books produced since 2016 would be re-evaluated in order to establish if any other errors have been being taught, O País reports.
Carmelita Namashulua said that “the indignation of society is the indignation of the government”.
The Minister was visiting Guebo Primary School in KaMavota municipal district, Maputo city, to see how Grade 6 students were being taught today without the use of the problematic textbook.
After attending a Social Sciences class, Namashulua talked to teachers, appealing for everyone to scrutinise carefully the contents of the manuals. The Minister explained that no errata to the text books would be distributed, given the number of mistakes they contain, and that teachers would continue to work without a textbook.
