The town of Mocímboa da Praia in northern Mozambique has been the scene of clashes between armed groups and defence and security forces since dawn, local sources told Lusa on Monday.
The reports heard by Lusa indicated that the population is locked inside their homes and that gunfire and fighting can be heard in several places in the village, along with the movement of at least one armoured vehicle.
Another report indicated that in peripheral neighbourhoods, members of armed groups are gathering the population in mosques, as happened in the Milamba neighbourhood.
Despite these attempts, Lusa has not yet been able to obtain clarification from the Mozambique Police.
Cabo Delgado province has been the target of attacks by armed groups, which international organisations have classified as a terrorist threat, and which in two and a half years has claimed at least 350 lives, in addition to 156,400 affected, due to the loss of property or forced to abandon their homes and land in search of safe places.
These attacks have occurred mainly in rural areas, but Mocímboa da Praia is one of the main urban centres in the region, a district headquarters, served by the only paved road that crosses the province and with an airfield capable of receiving international flights.
This is the town where the armed threat that has plagued Cabo Delgado since October 2017 began.
Mocímboa da Praia is 90 kilometres south of Palma, the district where international megaprojects for natural gas exploration are being built.
