President Filipe Nyusi says that Mozambican journalists should not reproduce wishes contrary to the unity of Mozambicans through the dissemination of incorrect and manipulated information which aims to discourage citizens from contributing to the development of the country.
In a message sent to ‘O País’ on the occasion of the ‘Day of the Mozambican Journalist’, the head of state acknowledges the commitment of journalists covering the central and northern operational theatres, and reporting events with “rigour, professionalism and patriotism”.
“The celebration of this date happens at a very peculiar moment, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is a challenge for all of us, not only because it affects the journalist’s own activity, but mainly because it affects the normal functioning of society as a whole,” the president writes.
Filipe Nyusi writes that, although journalism is a “vital” activity in the education of society with regard to Covid-19, it constitutes “a patriotic vision for a healthier life and responsible attitude”.
The government says it recognises the role of the journalist and, therefore, “has adopted measures aiming to facilitate the exercise of this noble profession, through laws adjusted to the journalistic profession and leading to the creation of independent and regulatory bodies exempt from external interference”.
In the document sent by the presidency, Nyusi says that the executive will continue to “cherish the Mozambican journalist, so that journalism is a true vehicle for transmitting reliable information, values of patriotism, building a more cohesive and educated society”.
The 11th of April, the ‘Day of the Mozambican Journalist’, is this year celebrated under the motto “Rigor and Professionalism: Challenges of Contemporary Journalism”.
