Mariana Muianga, mother of the former President of the Republic, Joaquim Chissano, died this Tuesday in Maputo.
According to Rádio Moçambique, Mariana Muianga, a widow, lived in Malehice, Chibuto district, Gaza province.
‘Vovó Mariana’ was born on December 9, 1915.
She passed away at ICOR – Instituto do Coração, in Maputo.
In 2015, when she turned 100, Mariana Muianga had seven of her 10 children still alive, namely José Luís, Maria, Joaquim Chissano, Alberto, Henrique, Felizardo and Miguel; 55 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was 60 years old at the time Mozambique became independent, on June 25, 1975. “They came for me, to go and see the proclamation of Independence at the Machava Stadium. I remember we were wet with rain, but no one left. I was there with Eduardo Mondlane’s cousin. The patriotic sense was stronger. That is why I pray every day for the Mozambican people to remain united and strong. Only in this way can we develop the country,” Mariana Muianga told Notícias in an interview published on December 14, 2015.
