The Joaquim Chissano Foundation on Friday evening honoured Mozambique’s honorary consul in Germany’s Bavaria and Saxony, Siegfried Lingel, with foundation patron Joaquim Chissano describing the consul as a great but humble man who had dedicated part of his life to the social support of Mozambicans.
“Here are 25 years as honorary consulate, years dedicated to the support of Mozambicans in need, years of approaching people. Hence, a night of homage to this man,” he said.
Siegfried Lingel excels in supporting various social projects in Mozambique, particularly in education, health and agriculture.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário said that, above all, Lingel’s role has resulted in the creation of stronger relations between Mozambique and Germany.
Do Rosário added that the mobilisation of investors from Germany, in particular from Bavaria, embodied the government strategy of promoting economic diplomacy for the implementation of its Five-Year Plan.
At the time, the former president of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano, encouraged Consul Lingel to continue to establish closer ties between Mozambicans and Germany through twinning agreements, in order to leverage economic partnerships between the two countries and peoples.
According to Joaquim Chissano, cooperation between public institutions of the two countries, such as ministries and municipalities, also merited the consul’s attention.
Recently, the municipalities of Alen in Germany and Vilankulo in Mozambique had established a twinning agreement, which, according to Joaquim Chissano, would bring many benefits to Vilankulo.
The honouree was said to be very happy at the ceremony in the company of former rulers and notables, who enjoyed performances by top Mozambican musicians.
