Desportivo de Maputo may have found its new leader. João Figueiredo, former Banco Único chairman, has been proposed by several club notables as the man to lead the historical club out of a crisis so deep that it caused the departure of former chairman Michel Grispos.
Instead of setting up a completely new team, the electoral General Assembly scheduled for Saturday, February 20, may well be opting for an administrative committee led by João “Jofi” Figueiredo, along with businessman Salimo Abdula, who was president of the general Assembly of the Mozambican Football Federation in the Feizal Sidat directorate.
With administrative problems being gradually solved and financial and sporting stability returning to the club, a massive return of members is expected.
Although Figueiredo is amassing consensus, other names are being mentioned, such as Quinito Todo, Samora Machel Junior.
As for Danilo Correia, currently head of the Management Committee of the Desportivo, he is expected to remain as president of the Mozambican Cycling Federation.
The crisis in Desportivo de Maputo reached its peak last year with wages delays bringing the football team to the brink of relegation. Despite the crisis, the basketball team won the Senior Men’s National Championship, but was left without money to go to Angola to represent the country in the Africa Champions Cup.
