Japan’s environment minister Tadahiko Ito has announced that his government will assist in carrying out a feasibility study on the closure of Maputo’s Hulene dump.
Ito met his Mozambican counterpart Celso Correia yesterday, with the aim of strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The amount involved has not been revealed, but Minister Correia said that a feasibility study was the first and most important step in closing the dump.
Last February at least 17 people died and five others were injured following the collapse of part of the dump.
