Among events commemorating the Island of Mozambique’s 200-year centenary, a group of scholars is discussing the issue of slavery.
Studying slavery could promote peace and a better understanding of the African diaspora, the international colloquium on slavery at Casa Girassol, which runs until Thursday on the island of Mozambique, hopes.
Under the theme “Memories of Slavery on the Island of Mozambique: History, Resistance, Freedom and Heritage,” the colloquium is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s 200- year celebrations, and of the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.
Organised jointly by UNESCO, the Mozambique History Workshop and the Pedagogical and Eduardo Mondlane Universities, the colloquium brings together researchers, students and professors from South Africa, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, the United States, Reunion, Madagascar, Portugal, Kenya and Mozambique.
Although Angola’s history has links to slavery, which is the theme of a lot of work the country is carrying out either in its “Route of Slaves” project or with other countries of the PALOP (Portuguese-speaking African countries) grouping, the country is not represented at this event.
The colloquium is an opportunity to bring international researchers together to reflect on slavery, and share ongoing and completed work, and technical and methodological experience.
The project will foster the creation of nuclei and research groups on slavery, applications for joint research funds, academic and scientific exchange, and publicise presentations and academic events.
It is also expected to stimulate knowledge of the history of slavery in Mozambique and the diaspora among students in educational systems, as well as challenging Mozambican education institutions to incorporate content on the subject in the education curricula.
