Mozambique: Cabo Delgado insurgents destroy crops in alleged revenge attack
The week started hectically in the so-called “Pearl of the Indian Ocean”. While the largest urban centres are discussing the best ways to prevent the spread of the new Covid-19 coronavirus, people in the central and northern areas of Cabo Delgado province continue to wonder if their lives will ever return to normal.
This weekend, insurgents carried out two attacks in Meluco district, in the central region of Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province, resulting in the death of one person and injury to another, as well as several huts being set on fire.
The first attack took place on Saturday in Unguia village, which is located near National Road No. 380, and the second on Sunday, in the village Muaguide. Both victims were casualties of the first attack.
FDS “causes a stir” in Nangade
Meanwhile, in the northern part of Nangade district, a massive Defence and Security Forces (FDS) presence was causing unrest among residents, particularly traders.
According to one source, citizens of Nangade abandoned their belongings and fled on Saturday morning when they noticed the presence of military personnel in the area.
These, they heard, were going to capture insurgents allegedly carrying out commercial activities in the main market of the Nangade district headquarters village.
Sources say that those “picked up” are suspected of assisting in the logistics of the group that has terrorised the province for more than two years. They also report looting of traders’ products during the hour-long operation.
