The old National Road Number 6, which connects the administrative post of Inhamízua to the city of Beira, was officially reopened today. The 14-kilometre stretch cost about 200 million meticais to refurbish (around US$3.2 million at current exchange rates].
The rehabilitation of the section will put an end to the Calvary drivers suffer in order to enter the city, and decongest the only access to the port of Beira.
“The road was badly damaged and was always full of dust. Now it is paved and the cars circulate freely,” one resident said.
For the Beira Transport Association, the reopening of this road, duly rehabilitated, will facilitate the activity of Beira port users and the several dry ports along the thoroughfare.
“It’s a sigh of relief. Congestion in the port will fall off with the inauguration of this road,” the associations Hernâni Silva says.
The mayor of Beira, Daviz Simango, who reopened the road, wants carriers to contribute to the rehabilitation and maintenance of highways.
“The trucks have to start paying. They have to contribute to road maintenance – now. How it’s going to be done, we’ll have to discuss. We do not want to extort anyone, but we want to ensure that this road is maintained,” Simango said.
