Mozambican police detained three individuals selling veterinary medicines without proper professional registration in Maputo on Friday during a joint operation involving members of the Canine Police, National Directorate of Veterinary Services and the Veterinary Medical Association.
The operation was triggered by the Maputo City Veterinary Authority, which requested the help of the police to address assistance offered by individuals not accredited for this purpose.
The representative of the National Directorate of Veterinary Services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Safety, Fernando Reis, said that the illegal operators were cheating animal owners regarding rabies treatment.
“To purchase rabies vaccines, it is necessary to have a professional card, which indicates that the person is really a veterinarian,” Reis explained, and fraudulent acquisition of vaccines would not allow good conservation and, as a consequence, the vaccine would not produce the desired immunity in the animals.
He explained the dangers of unauthorised activity stating that “illegal canine vaccination allows the development of rabies in animals that end up attacking all the people who cross their paths”.
It is estimated that there are at present more than 10 individuals working illegally as veterinarians in Maputo.
“These individuals go to the homes of animal owners and administer the illegal vaccine,” Reis revealed.
The President of the Supervisory Board at the Veterinary Administration in Mozambique, Ana Timane, says that there are currently more than 1,000 veterinarians in the country, of which only 300 are registered in that association.
Timane believes that the poor sign-up rate is due to lack of inspection activity.
“This activity will persuade veterinarians to join the register and carry out vaccination legally,” she said.
“All those who do not have the professional card will be penalized according to the penal code of the Veterinary Medical Order. This action will take place across the country to discourage those veterinarians who do not have the professional card,” she warned.
The Order of Veterinary Doctors is dedicated to defending public health and protecting veterinary medicine by issuing professional licenses.
