The National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) inspected 1,216 commercial establishments across the country between 11 and 22 September. Of these, seven were closed because they presented hygiene problems, lack of licenses and absence of adequate price labelling.
The closures took place in Niassa, Manica, Sofala and Inhambane provinces. Inhambane, with four, had the largest number of outlets closed.
“Bakeries and ‘pensions’ (boarding houses) were closed due to problems related to hygiene and cleaning, lack of price labelling and illegal activity. Some establishments presented more than one problem,” INAE spokesperson Ali Mussa said at the institution’s biweekly briefing yesterday.
Two bakeries were closed down – one each in Sofala and Niassa – for hygiene and cleanliness infractions. “Workers were using bathrooms in poor condition and likely to carry bacteria into the bread-making and handling area, posing a public health problem,” Mussa said. Arsh Bakery in Niassa was fined 159,000 meticais, equivalent to 40 times the minimum wage.
In Manica, inspectors closed the municipal abattoir.
“There were serious deficiencies in draining the soil water from the washing of the meat of the slaughtered animals. The roof of the slaughterhouse collapsed and was not replaced, allowing flies into the production area. Workers did not have uniforms and the locker rooms were in bad condition,” Mussa explained.
The reopening of closed establishments is conditional on the correction of infractions and a repeat visit by INAE inspectors.
The National Inspectorate of Economic Activities called on abattoir managers to observe hygiene and cleanliness standards in their establishments, and says it will be mounting more inspections in the coming days.
“I call on all slaughterhouse managers across the country, municipal or not, to strictly observe hygiene and cleanliness conditions. Slaughterers work with meat, and if hygiene and cleanliness conditions are not met, we will be supplying contaminated meat to consumers, constituting a danger to public health,” Mussa said.

The INAE says its objective is not to close establishments or impose fines, but to ensure the exercise of activities according to standards established by law.
