The alleged appearance of precious stones unearthed by roadworks along Avenida Eduardo Mondlane in the city of Nampula has drawn many there looking for gems among the rubble.
Earth-moving machines are still working but the would-be prospectors are immune to the danger.
The provincial directorate of Mineral Resources and Energy explains that the ore supposedly being found is of low commercial value and was transported there years ago when a company holding a mining license was located nearby.
“There is material that the owner said was of low commercial value and was transported there according to the size of the stones,” explains Mucussete António of Tec. Rec. Minerals.
Work on the second stretch of Avenida Eduardo Mondlane began on Friday after O País reported the lack of alternative roads to the Nampula municipal council.
