The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has authorised the resumption of hippopotamus sport hunting in Mozambique.
The 69th CITES meeting, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, overturned Mozambique’s five-year suspension of hippo hunting and the export of trophies. Hungary, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi were among those who supported the resumption.
In 2012, CITES decided to suspend commercial hippo hunting and trophy trafficking when it became clear that there was no clarity on the number of hippos in the country, which made it difficult to allocate quotas.
