The government reopened the Muhammad Mosque in Pemba last Saturday, having previously closed it for allegedly supporting the armed men who since October 2017 have been carrying out terrorist attacks in the province of Cabo Delgado.
The re-opening was officially confirmed by the governor of Cabo Delegado province, Julio Parruque, albeit with a new leadership chosen by the Islamic Community of Cabo Delgado, which once again distanced itself from the terrorist attacks.
In total, seven mosques have been closed, of which two, in Mocímboa da Praia, were destroyed on government orders.
October 5, 2017, saw the first shot fired in the ongoing round of armed attacks in Cabo Delgado.
