The Mozambican government on Tuesday said it is committed to ensuring that all basic goods will be available, at fair market prices, over the 2018-19 festive season.
Speaking to reporters after the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers (Cabinet), the government spokesperson, the Deputy Minister of Culture and Tourism, Ana Comoana, declared that work is under way to ensure that all the goods needed for the Christmas and New Year holidays will be available in due time.
To avoid price speculation over the festive season, the government “will undertake greater inspection and monitoring, particularly of activity in the markets, with greatest stress on the wholesalers, so as to ensure price stability and prevent any attempt at speculation”.
There will be no shortages, she insisted, since the government is working with the suppliers to ensure that sufficient goods will be on the market.
The Council of Ministers also approved an agricultural marketing plan for the 2018-2020 period, budgeted at around 500 million meticais (about 8.3 million US dollars).
“The general objectives of this plan concern the need to promote linkages between the major agricultural producers and large industries, the need to identify new products and stimulate production and productivity to respond to these same markets, and to continue guaranteeing access to credit, particularly through the rotating agricultural marketing fund”, said Comoana.
The money will also cover “the promotion and development of facilities for storing and conserving agricultural produce, and improving access roads, particularly those from the poles of production to the markets”.
The government also approved a resolution relieving Mateus Magala of his duties as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the publicly-owned electricity company, EDM. Magala, whose work at EDM has been highly praised is returning to his previous employer, the African Development Bank (ADB), which has appointed him one of its vice presidents.
