In an unprecedented football match that took place this Saturday on the Costa do Sol soccer field, a Council of Ministers team with the President of the Republic at its head beat the members of the Mozambique Diplomatic Corps 4-2.
Team captain President Filipe Nyusi had promised two things: to score a goal himself and that his team would win the game. The first didn’t happen, but the second did. And although the president didn’t score, Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosário did not leave his glory to the efforts of others and contributed a goal to the government team’s victory.
The match drew a considerable amount of support, with many eager to see the ministers, and particularly President Nyusi, play. The foreign diplomats took an early lead, scoring within two minutes of kick- off and presently leading 2-0.
However, the government team, with Carlos Agostinho do Rosário now at the helm – President Nyusi withdrew after demonstrating some exemplary football skills – were full of bravado and headed on for the turnaround, winning with two goals from Carlos Buque, one from Carlos Agostinho do Rosário and Henriques Bongece, Deputy Minister of the Sea, Inland Waters and Fisheries, netting one from the penalty spot.
The game was organized by the National Sports Institute as part of the Sport and Citizenship program.
