At the integration ceremony for new members in Pemba, capital of northern Cabo Delgado province, the commander general of the PRM, Bernardino Rafael, spoke about the patenting of the new recruits resulting from the Hostility Cessation Agreements and Maputo General Agreement signed between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade in August, 2019.
“From now on, you must obey only the law and the fundamental rules that regulate the action of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique. You have no other command than the law of the police,” Rafael said.
Before their incorporation, officers from the Renamo guerrilla benefited from basic training and pre-professional training to provide them with the necessary tools to meet the challenges of working within the republican force.
New functions
“Any command outside this [Police Law] means a flagrant violation of the legal instruments of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique. Therefore, comply with zeal and responsibility and do not let yourself be influenced by anything else, because we are a family,” Rafael warned.
Augusta Marimba is a former Renamo combatant and was patented to assume the role of traffic regulator in the city of Maputo. “I am very satisfied. I always dreamed of being a police officer, and today I have fulfilled my dream. It is a great challenge that I will face in the new role that I was assigned, ensuring the regulation of public roads.”
Some of these former Renamo guerrillas now appointed to the Police assume positions of direction and leadership, which means increased responsibilities.
Lindos José was sworn in as Head of Operations for the Fifth PRM Police Station in Beira, and promises to work on reducing the crime rate in the Sofala provincial capital in collaboration with his colleagues.
“I know the suffering of the people, so I will fight to stop criminals and thieves and fight domestic violence”.
The DDR process moves forward
Other cadres were also appointed to positions of Chief of Discipline of the Border Police, Commander of Police stations, and the Police for the Protection of Natural Resources and the Environment.
The Demilitarisation, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) process, which involves about 5,000 members of the armed wing of the largest opposition party and started on June 4, has so far covered 38 ex-guerrillas in Savane, 251 ex-guerrillas in Chibabava and another 303 in Dondo, in the central province of Sofala.
In Chibabava, Sofala, last Friday (03-07), the enrolment of about 251 Renamo guerrillas took place, including more than ten who for months had supported the self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, which is accused by the authorities of carrying out ongoing attacks in Sofala and Manica provinces.
The Military Junta is led by Mariano Nhongo, a former guerrilla leader now accused of carrying out attacks on security and civilian targets and causing at least 24 deaths in villages and on roads in the centre of the country.
Among other things, Nhongo is demanding the resignation of Renamo president Ossufo Momade, who he accuses of having betrayed the ideals of his predecessor, historic leader of the party Afonso Dhlakama, who died in May, 2018.
