Flood alerts issued in December for seven provinces in the centre and north of Mozambique were lifted on Monday.
The Technical Council for Disaster Management (CTGC) considers the risk of new rain-related emergencies minimal. “Based on forecasts, the CTGC has decided to lift the orange alert in the central and northern regions of the country, which has been in force since December,” the CTGC communique reads.
The latest rainy season damage balance sheet numbers 61 dead among the 150,000 or so affected.
The CTGC brings together the Mozambique National Institute of Disaster Management (INGC) and national and foreign partners.
The same organ’s restrictions on water supply to the Maputo region remain in place. The Umbelúzi river basin recorded “insignificant increases” in flow during the rainy season, and what little increase there was has, according to the same source, “almost come to an end”.
“In view of the of drought situation in the Umbelúzi basin, and the Pequenos Libombos dam in particular, water supply restrictions to the cities of Maputo, Matola and the town of Boane have no end in sight”, and “may be further tightened”, the government website relates.
Those who have access to the public water will know that water runs from their taps only a few hours of a few days of the week, with residents often resorting to filling containers during that time for use later.
