The bodies of five young Mozambican immigrants killed in separate locations in the Johannesburg area over the past week will be repatriated to Maputo this weekend.
One, a miner, was detained by police in a state of drunkenness in the platinum-mining region, and found dead in his cell the next day. The police allege that the miner committed suicide, but the Mozambique Ministry of Labour has requested an autopsy.
Information on the murders was confirmed late Wednesday by relatives of the victims. In all five cases, the perpetrators and motives for the crimes remain unknown.
The family of Moses Raimundo, 38, stabbed in the chest on Saturday night while out celebrating his birthday, is very traumatised by remaining unaware of the reason for the crime, the perpetrator of which is still at large.
One family member says Raimundo was celebrating in a restaurant in Regents Park, south of Johannesburg, with his wife and friends. He left the party for a moment, only to be found twenty minutes later, sprawled on the floor in a pool of his own blood.
Raimundo leaves a widow and three children.
A few hours later, on the same day and in the same place and that Raimundo died, an employee with the Mozambican Ministry of Labour delegation in South Africa was beaten up and his car was stolen.
The same weekend, three young Mozambicans were brutally murdered in Voslurus, about 40 kilometres south of Johannesburg.
One of the relatives of the victims, Elias Mandlaze, told VOA that a total of five young people killed in the same incident, three of them Mozambicans, but the police have still not apprehended the culprits or offered any motive for the crime.
Mozambican and business community leader Amélia Nhantumbo said that the bodies of the victims would be repatriated on Saturday for their funeral in Maputo, capital of Mozambique.
At least 10 Mozambicans have been murdered in separate locations in the Johannesburg region in less than a month.
