President Filipe Jacinto Nyusi of Mozambique has written a message of congratulations to veteran of the national liberation struggle Marcelino dos Santos (Kalungano) on his 90th birthday, which he celebrates today.
In his message, the head of state says that we celebrate Marcelino dos Santos’ birthday with the feeling that, after these 90 years of a life of service and dedication to the national cause, no words are sufficient to convey the praise he truly deserves.
Here is the text of the message.
Comrade Marcelino dos Santos;
Kalungano;
On behalf of all the Mozambicans, whom we have the privilege of representing, we wish to express words of praise and congratulations to you, Kalungano, on your birthday. You, who are an inescapable personality in the history of the liberation of Mozambique.
We want to use this singular moment to celebrate with emotion the life and work of a MAN, showing, with great sincerity and solemnity, that he deserves the enormous impact that his journey represents for each one of us and for the history of a people and of this nation which heroically rises, buoyed up by his invaluable contribution.
Today, we have a unique opportunity to evoke, loudly and clearly, your story, in which you unreservedly gave all to build this nation which we call Mozambique, whose course is intertwined with your own.
Comrade Marcelino, we celebrate your birthday with the feeling that after these 90 years of a life of service and dedication to the national cause, all words become insufficient for the compliments that you are worthy of. The best rhetoric to accompany you on this anniversary is undoubtedly our friendly embrace, expressing the brotherhood that words cannot.
We want to remind you that the country which you dreamed about with Mondlane and the other comrades, is treading the paths of peace, development and prosperity, and your vision is being continued, relying on the strength we have.
The trees you planted, the texts you wrote, the struggles you waged, are today the reason for our strength to continue to fight for the emancipation of a people whose past was captured by colonialism.
We will continue serving on the front line to ensure that every Mozambican enjoys the fruits of independence and the dream of a Mozambique where we all share the nobility of freedom and the taste of progress.
The comrades who accompanied you in the great epic for the liberation of our heroic homeland, your children and millions of Mozambicans are joining your family today to sing, loudly, ‘Parabéns, Kalungano!’
We salute you, Kalungano, both for your birthday and your family, who have supported you unconditionally throughout the course of your life. Congratulations for every drop of sweat and labour dedicated to the endeavour which led this people to today enjoying a place called a nation.
Today and always, you, Kalungano, our national hero, deserve many tributes and much affection from this people for whom you fought, to whom you gave all your intelligence and to whose call you always shown readiness to respond.
On behalf of all Mozambicans, myself included, I wish you a long life, and a surfeit of peace and happiness.
Happy Birthday, Kalungano!
