Households in Mozambique spend an average of 6,924 meticais (US$147) per month, equivalent to 1,406 meticais per person, according to figures from the Household Budget Survey (HBS) for 2014/2015.
The statistical data collection for this survey, whose results were released a few days ago in Maputo, was conducted across the country from 7 August, 2014 to 15 August 2015.
The data collected showed that average monthly expenditure of urban areas exceeded the national average with 11,889 meticais (2,360 meticais per person) and that in rural areas household spending was lower, totalling an average of 4,654 meticais or 956 meticais per person.
Figures by province showed that households in the provinces of Maputo and Maputo City had average monthly expenses far above the national average with 14,865 meticais and 25,912 meticais, respectively.
The provinces of Zambézia and Nampula had the lowest average monthly expenses – 3,749 and 4123 meticais respectively – which had also been the case in the previous two surveys.
To carry out this survey 11,628 households were selected, distributed proportionately throughout the county’s provinces, 6,380 in urban areas and 5,248 in rural areas, of an extrapolated total of about 5 million.Source: Macauhub
