The ExxonMobil Foundation, together with the ExxonMobil Corporation affiliated in Mozambique, last Thursday (07-02) announced contributions for 2019 to community organisations in Mozambique of over US$1.6 million.
The funds will be directed to projects aimed at continuing the fight against malaria, promoting women’s economic development, agriculture, literacy programmes and access to drinking water.
The announcement was made at the Polana Serena Hotel during a workshop with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Action (MGCAS), on Thursday, February 7.
Among the beneficiary organisations are TechnoServe, Opportunity International, Tchova Tchova, GrassRoots Soccer and KickStart. The subsidies concerned will benefit communities in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Zambézia, Sofala, Inhambane and Maputo.
“Since the beginning of our activities in December 2017, ExxonMobil Moçambique Lda. has financed programmes that address community needs and promote community development in Mozambique,” said Jos Evens, Managing Director of ExxonMobil Moçambique Lda.
“ExxonMobil is committed to supporting long-term economic and social development. It is critical that there be cooperation with local and central government, implementing partners and host communities to ensure that these investments have the desired impact,” Evens added.
In the context of the company’s community investment strategy, ExxonMobil highlighted the Memorandum of Understanding it signed with MGCAS to implement the various company-sponsored community initiatives, strengthening efforts by the ministry and organisations active in women’s economic development.
Speaking at the meeting, MGCAS Deputy Gender Director Sansão Buque highlighted the importance of dialogue platforms such as the workshop to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders and urged stakeholders to find solutions to the well-being of communities.
Buque said that ExxonMobil’s actions symbolises the will to improve the population’s life, and that the donation would make it easier for organisations to combat premature marriages, ensure children’s education, empower women and fight malaria.
The ExxonMobil Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of the Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States. The Foundation has a strategic focus supporting education with an emphasis on maths and science in the United States, promoting women as catalysts for economic development and ending deaths from malaria.
