Mozambique: 185 kidnap cases recorded since 2011 - Minister
The representative of the European Union (EU) in Mozambique urged the country to adopt an integrated approach to the implementation of the UN sustainable development goals on Thursday and highlighted the dissemination of information as a priority.
Speaking at a conference in Maputo as part of the EU week, Sven von Burgsdorff said that the fulfilment of the UN development goals embodied in the national Five Year Plan in 2015 involves the adoption of a multi-sectoral strategy to commitments undertaken at national, regional and community levels.
“We need working groups within ministries to reflect on the challenges we have in the Government’s Five-Year Plan to fulfil the goals [by 2030],” the EU ambassador said, stressing the need for the involvement of civil society, academics, international partners and entrepreneurs in the dissemination and discussion of the goals.
Among the 17 sustainable development goals undertaken by Mozambique are the eradication of the extreme poverty currently affecting about half the population, the promotion of a peaceful society, currently threatened by the political crisis that opposes government and the biggest party opposition, and the elimination of gender inequalities.
Sven von Burgsdorff says that the gap between living standards in Mozambique, one of the sustainable development goals, will only be overcome with the adoption of a joint strategy which values social justice.
“Nearly 50 percent of the population cannot write, and that is the biggest challenge yet,” von Burgsdorff said, noting that it is important that language and culture are used to promote these objectives to the extent that the people need to know them.
“The task ahead is very great,” he said, while nevertheless expressing optimism and the EU’s willingness to help.
