Mozambique’s general employment index numbers fell one percent in January 2019, compared to the previous month, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
There were fewer jobs at the beginning of the year. The INE reports that the index stood at 121% in January of this year, 1% less than in December 2018 and the biggest slowdown in six months.
This negative variation in the general employment index was due to poor performance in tourism, trade, transport, industry and other services sectors by 7.4%, 6.9%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively.
Overall, the Economic Activity Indexes for January 2019, when compared to the previous month, also point to the decrease in the general turnover index and the general remuneration index by 12.8% and 3.4%, respectively.
The deceleration of the general turnover index was due to the negative variation in the sectors of transport, commerce, tourism, industry and other services of 18.9% 17.7%, 14.8%, 2.0% and 19.5%, respectively, the National Statistics Institute’s synthesis of macroeconomic indicators indicates.
The decrease in the general remuneration index in January was led by the transport, tourism, trade and industry sectors in the measures of 7.4%, 6.9%, 1.5% and 1.3%, respectively.
Comparing the overall indices for January 2019 with those of the same period last year, there was an increase in business volume (turnover) of 6.6% and a decrease in the employment and remuneration indexes by 0.5 % and 0.2%, respectively.
The purpose of the INE publication is to report the general picture of the short-term evolution of economic indices structured according to the classification of Mozambican Economic Activities.
The INE has been issuing the results of monthly economic surveys since 2004, the most recent edition having reached number 178.
