Spanish court to order arrest of Equatorial Guinea leader's son
East Timor has climbed three points in the Repórteres Sem Fronteiras (RSF) press freedom index making it the best placed South-east Asian country, almost 30 places ahead of the second best placed Indonesia.
The NGO’s 2017 report highlighted that no reporter has been detained in East Timor since the country restored Independence, though there were various forms of pressure that continued to be applied to journalists.
These pressures, used to stop reporters working freely, include legal intimidation actions, police violence and criticisms of the press by government employees and MPs.
The RSF said it hoped that after the 12 May elections the new government would take firm steps to increase the country’s ranking in world press freedom.
