The Mozambican government has decided that shippers must begin to declare and demonstrate the methods used to verify the gross weight of containers being loaded onto ships.
The decision, announced yesterday by government spokeswoman Ana Comoana, is aimed at safeguarding people’s lives at sea.
“The ultimate goal of this measure is to prevent casualties that may result from false container weight claims,” she said.
The move is in line with the International Convention for the Safeguarding of Human Life at Sea, adopted in London in May 2014 by the International Maritime Organisation, of which Mozambique is a member.
