The number of confirmed dead in the boat sinking last Wednesday (08-05) in Zambezia province has risen to 17, with one of the passengers recorded as still missing.
The search teams recovered eight bodies on Saturday (11), which joined three others located the day before and the six found on the day of the tragedy.
According to Chinde District Administrator, Pedro Vírgula, the small wooden vessel sank while making the Chinde-Marromeu crossing, apparently after hitting a log in the Zambezi river, was carrying 52 passengers, with 34 surviving and one still recorded as missing.
Last week, another wooden boat carrying passengers in Sofala province was wrecked with 40 people on board, but all were rescued.
Passenger boat accidents are commonplace in Mozambique because of the inability of successive governments to acquire sufficient vessels properly suited to the transport of people between districts and localities connected only by river or sea with the rest of the country.
