Daviz Simango, president of the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) has called on the government to urgently offer psychological assistance to members of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado.
“Our force in Cabo Delgado constantly deals with horrors perpetrated by insurgents. The war in Cabo Delgado is not a normal war. The FDS are being affected psychologically by the barbarities committed by the terrorists,” said Daviz Simango, who is also a member of the Council of State.
“They [FDS] are confusing terrorists with local communities. This creates a distance between the forces and the population, and brings the victims closer to the bandits. There is an urgent need to find ways of psychologically assisting the members of the FDS in Cabo Delgado, as well as creating conditions for training in how to deal with terrorism,” Simango said.
The call by the mayor of Beira comes a day after his meeting a group of refugees from Cabo Delgado now accommodated in the province of Nampula, to whom he offered food aid.
As a member of the Council of State, Simango promised to inform President Nyusi, through official channels, of what he saw in the north.
“We will discuss this matter with the nation’s highest magistrate in our own forum. Our mission is to rescue the dignity of the Defence and Security Forces,” he stressed.
