The National Administration of Justice has ordered the release of 250 prisoners serving sentences of less than one year from the Maputo Provincial Penitentiary. Their release comes under the Amnesty Law and presidential pardon initiative, as witnessed by the Secretary of State for Maputo Province, Vitória Diogo.
It was a call to freedom after confinement in the cells and distancing from family and friends and, one by one, the first 20 beneficiaries received their respective release warrants.
Law 2/2020 of 6 April, the law of amnesty and pardon of sentences of up to one year, by presidential initiative, thus reached the province of Maputo.
Moments later, Vitória Diogo attended a face-to-face meeting, where the beneficiaries of the pardon promised that they would uphold good behavioural standards within the broader society.
Before leaving the prison, the soon-to-be ex-prisoners participated in prayer and received the New Testament and another book, TV Miramar reports.
Maputo Province Prison, the largest in the country, has 3,248 prisoners, of whom about half will benefit from the pardon and be released, in line with what is taking place across the country. The measure is part of the fight against the spread of Covid-19.
