Located 230 kilometres from the city of Tete, the district of Angónia has not yet registered a single positive Covid-19 case. However, authorities there are fully prepared to deal with and possible contamination scenario, especially after the reopening of the border with Malawi – a country which, by Sunday (July 2) had registered 2,364 positive cases, 1,769 active, with 557 recoveries and 38 deaths.
“We have 144 kilometre of border with neighbouring Malawi, through two districts, one of which has already registered 20 positive cases of this disease. Following the guidance of central government, we reopened the border after three months closure. The ceremony brought together Mozambican and Malawi authorities. At the event, we left a clear message that the reopening of the border was to enable the movement of cargo trucks and not passenger transportation. All truck drivers must undergo a screening before and after crossing our territory, to assess their health condition. And because on the other side there is no mandatory use of masks, we had to reach a consensus to avoid contamination during joint dispatches between our police and the Malawian police. We urged them to wear masks during these processes and are adopting security measures to prevent the spread of the virus here,” Paulo Sebastião explained.
The district government also distributed more than 5,000 masks to vulnerable people and those exposed to the risk of contamination.
“We have 38 mobile awareness-raising brigades active in the communities. In addition to the masks, we have already distributed more than 1000 buckets with taps for hand washing. In these actions, we have prioritised the elderly, people with disabilities and other vulnerable groups. Because this is a continuous action, we decided, through the Consultative Council, to use FDD (District Development Fund) resources to develop actions aimed at increasing the manufacture of masks and the purchase of materials for their production,” Sebastião concluded.
