Court orders vote recount in 185 of the 258 polling stations in Kamavota in Maputo city – Mozambique Elections

The KaMavota Municipal District Court in Maputo city ordered the recount of votes at 185 polling stations. The decision is in response to the appeal filed by Renamo.

According to the court’s decision, there were, in fact, irregularities in the process of determining the results of the municipal elections on October 11th. The KaMavota District Court concluded that the results had been rigged.

In table 0102329-03, for example, the documents presented by the District Elections Commission indicate that Renamo has 149 votes and Frelimo, 290, but, analysing the documents presented by MDM, which participates in the case as a witness, Renamo had 249 votes and Frelimo, 190.

It also appears that the KaMavota District Election Commission was unable to present original documents of the intermediate count at the level of its jurisdiction, if not copies.

In the KaMavota Municipal District, there were a total of 258 polling stations, of which 185 polling stations must be recounted, according to the court’s decision.

Renamo, which was represented by Ivan Mazanga, says that the decision taken by the court is an opportunity to rescue the will of the electorate. “This is a feeling of joy. We came here to confirm the will of the court’s decision. The Mozambican population and the citizens of Maputo may be celebrating, because what they put in the ballot boxes will be revealed”, said Mazanga.
