The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, has expressed the organisation’s readiness to support the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, in peace negotiations in the country.
The availability was expressed on Monday in Maputo after an audience granted by the Mozambican Head of State as part of the official visit that Scotland started on Saturday.
The Commonwealth Secretary-General, cited by Rádio Moçambique, said that the contacts between the president of the Republic and the leader of the Renamo are part of the principles of good governance, a fact which pleases international community.
The impact of climate change was one of the issues addressed at the Nyusi-Scotland meeting, with the Secretary-General sharing the Commonwealth’s new combat strategy, which could also benefit Mozambique.
The Commonwealth is an intergovernmental organisation composed of 53 independent member countries, which cooperate in a common framework of values and objectives.
Most of the member countries are former British colonies, with the exception of Mozambique, which joined the organisation in 1995 and Rwanda in 2009 .
