A 47-year-old Catholic priest has died as a result of injuries sustained in an attack at his home in Beira on Sunday, Mozambican police said on Monday.
Father Landry Ibil Ikwel, a Congolese national, had been active in the diocese of Beira for 10 years and was stabbed by persons unknown at his residence in the Manga neighbourhood. Police suspect he was also poisoned.
Fater Ikwel was taken to the city’s central hospital with abdominal and neck wounds, but succumbed to his injuries.
He was a priest of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts and the director of the Beira Institute for the Visually Impaired (Instituto de Deficientes Visuais da Beira -IDV).
Father Landry Ikwel was also involved in the promotion of anti-corruption actions, within the Community of Sant’Egidio, an institution dedicated to charity, evangelisation and peace promotion.
