The Attorney’s Office in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado has forwarded to the provincial court the case of a man named as N.B. Maita, who is allegedly an agent for the terrorist groups operating in Macomia district.
According to a report in the Maputo daily “Noticias”, Maita is accused of collecting intelligence on the movements and operational capacity in the district of the Mozambican defence and security forces.
Cited by the paper, the spokesperson for the Provincial Attorney’s office, Angelo Sueta, said the charges against Maita include espionage, possession of banned weapons, criminal conspiracy and membership of terrorist organisations.
He allegedly left Nacala, in the neighbouring province of Nampula, in 2020, and travelled to the island of Macaloe, off the Macomia coast, where he worked as a fisherman, providing fish to the terrorists. He was accompanied by his Tanzanian wife, and two men, one Kenyan and the other Congolese.
Maita received military training at a terrorist camp on the banks of the Messalo river, and was then given the task of collecting information on the movements of the Mozambican forces. On 17 December 2021, he was sent as a spy to Rolas Island, where he was caught.
He was found in a boat which also contained a pistol, two knives, a pair of scissors, a military belt, and a copy of the Koran.
If found guilty of the charges against him, Maita could be facing a prison sentence of between 16 and 20 years.
