Mozambique: 'Bantu' opens in Maputo

Banda Kakana is preparing several surprises, apart from hits from their two albums, to make the Standard Bank Acacia Jazz festival a memorable event.
Vocalist Yolanda Chicane said the group was “tamed by the spirit of shows”, having recently launched their new album “Juntos”, described by her as a continuation of their “Serenata” album but more acoustic and full of messages that highlight love, peace and high moral values.
Chicane said that, this being a jazz festival, Banda Kakana would naturally offer jazz lovers plenty, “without neglecting the styles that characterize us, and for which the public identifies us as marrabenta and mutimba-based”.
“We will play songs from the new album, Juntos, as well as from the old one, Serenata. We also have some surprises prepared,” she said, adding that the audience would undoubtedly hear the best that Banda Kakana has to offer.
The Standard Bank Acacia Jazz Festival on November 30 marks the 130th anniversary of the city of Maputo, Chicane said.
“This is an excellent initiative by Standard Bank, dedicated to Maputo, the city of acacias. I think the capital of the country deserves this honor,” she said.
The singer invited the audience to attend the November 30 show and revel in the sound of jazz and its fusions with traditional Mozambican and African rhythms.
The Standard Acacia Jazz Festival poster features Mozambican guitarist and author of the 2016 hit “Ha Deva”, Jimmy Dludlu. Among the other participants are Judith Sephuma of South Africa and Oliver Mtukudzi of Zimbabwe.
