The Austrian government has partnered with the United Nations Children’s Fund to support the construction of multi-use water systems powered by solar energy in rural Mozambique, APA learnt here on Monday.
Working through the Austrian Development Agency, the Austrian government is providing €1.1 million for a project to promote access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene to provinces in northern Mozambique which are most affected by lack of clean water.
“Thanks to these resources, we can act as a bridge of financial support in response to the gaps to meet the ambitious water, sanitation and hygiene goals that require considerable efforts in capacity building, greater sectoral investments and effective collaboration between the Mozambican government, citizens Mozambicans and development partners,” UNICEF deputy representative in Mozambique, Michel Le Pechoux said in a statement.
According to the statement, only half of Mozambique’s population has access to clean water supplies and only one in five uses improved sanitation.
It noted that the problem generally tends “to be weaker in the northern provinces” of the country such as Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Tete.
