A high-speed train collided with an empty train, killing at least seven people and injuring 46 others Wednesday morning in Turkey, according to Ankara Gov. Vasip Sahin.
Two carriages overturned as the trains crashed into an overpass, causing parts of the structure to collapse, the governor said from the scene, according to the state-run Anadolu Agency.
Some passengers were trapped in the train, Haberturk TV reported.
The train was travelling from the central Anatolian province of Konya to the capital and crashed at 6:30 a.m.
The crash took place 4 minutes after the train left the Marsandiz train station, CNN Turk reported.
“There were many injured people waiting to be rescued,” Yasin Duvar said to CNN. He said he helped free several people from the mangled train.
According to Anadolu, 206 passengers were on the train when it crashed.
On July 8, 25 people died when a passenger train derailed near the Turkish town of Corlu.
