Two teenage girls lost their lives on 10 December when they accidentally activated an anti-personnel mine while farming in the Morrumbala district of Zambezia province.
Provincial police spokesman Sidner Lonzo explained to reporters that the mine had been set off by the hoes that the girls, 13 and 16 years of age, were using in their “machamba”, in an area free of military facilities..
This is the third explosive device that has come to notice in Zambezia in less than two weeks. Another two were deactivated in the Morrumbala and Namacurra districts.
During the country’s 16-year civil war, numerous parts of Mozambique were mined by both government and Renamo forces, causing thousands of deaths. After more than two decades of demining, Mozambique was declared mine-free in 2015.
