Galp posts 2023 profit up 14% with 'solid performance' across board
The president of Angola’s major opposition party, the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Isaias Samakuva, said Wednesday that he intends to leave the party leadership.
“I affirmed to the Angolans before and during the elections campaign that after the elections I would leave the post of president of UNITA to serve the party in a different position. I maintain and reaffirm this decision,” said Samakuva at the opening of the fourth ordinary meeting of the political commission of the party’s standing committee.
Samakuva was elected president of the party in 2003 following the death in combat of Jonas Savimbi, leader and founder of UNITA.
He announced that the Wednesday’s meeting will among other issues discuss the holding of an extraordinary congress to elect the next president of the party.
UNITA was the second most voted party in the August 23 general elections, conquering 51 seats in parliament.
The ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won the elections with a qualified majority, occupying 150 seats in parliament.
Most opposition parties have rejected the results of the elections, citing a lack of transparency.
Angola’s new president and vice-president were sworn on Tuesday in Luanda in a ceremony shunned by most of the opposition parties.
