Noticias / President Filipe Nyusi at the AU Summit
The 30th African Union Summit ended yesterday, after two days of debates in the Ethiopian capital. President Filipe Nyusi, who joined several other heads of state in Addis Ababa for the meeting, said he considered the event productive and quite objective.
Speaking to the national press yesterday about Mozambique’s participation in the summit, President Nyusi said he considered one of the greatest gains was reflected in the very theme of the conference: ‘Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation’.
“This is a very important issue for us because it reflects total alignment with what we are doing in Mozambique,” the head of state said, adding “We have ended the year and entered the new one, but our crucial action continues to be the same, the fight against corruption as a step towards growth”.
Filipe Nyusi says the theme of this AU Summit shows “once again, that we are not out of context. After all, the context defined by us is universal, which finds in the fight against corruption one of the means to solve many of the concerns of communities”.
The president also considered that the 30th AU Summit very objective because of the way in which the issues raised were discussed.
“The issues were debated to completion. Anything that has remained open has deadlines on what, when and how it should come to a conclusion.”
One of the points of debate that took a long time and was not concluded was the issue of AU institutional reform. “We (Mozambique) have made our contribution, which has helped to come to some conclusions, but the subject will return to the discussion at the June/July Summit in Mauritania,” the Head of State said.
In the debate on the report on peace and security, an important issue for the continent, “we have appealed and expressed our satisfaction with the document’s fidelity” to the current situation on the continent, which continues to be plagued by conflicts and lack of peace and security in some countries, but “we have also pointed out improvements, especially in the area of democracy”.
The summit also discussed the establishment of a continental free trade zone. The debate was not completed but, given its relevance, an extraordinary summit was already scheduled for Kigali, Rwanda, in March, in which the dossier should be closed.
The head of state also drew attention to his participation in the APRM ( African Peer Review Mechanism ) meeting in which Mozambique confirmed its willingness to open itself to the second evaluation phase at the meeting on climate change and other various meetings held on the sidelines of the 30th AU Summit.
President Nyusi also mentioned the entry into force of the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), of which Mozambique is a member.
“This means that the Mozambican business community must act, and not wait for others to occupy the space,” the president warned.
Nyusi also highlighted the several bilateral meetings he held in Addis Ababa, “some fairly formal and others informal, but no less important”.
“It was good that we were here, because we left our mark,” he concluded.
The head of state ends his stay in the Ethiopian capital today with participation in an Africa-United States business forum.
