HCB to host the José Craveirinha Literature prize and 7th edition of the Songo book fair
The Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric (HCB) Plant, in partnership with the Association of Mozambican Writers (AEMO), will hold the ceremony of presentation of the José Craveirinha Literature Prize on October 26th.
José Craveirinha was a Mozambican journalist, story writer and poet, who is today considered the greatest poet of Mozambique. His poems, written in Portuguese, addressed such issues as racism and the Portuguese colonial domination of Mozambique. A supporter of the anti-Portuguese group FRELIMO during the colonial wars, he was imprisoned in the 1960s. He was one of the African pioneers of the Négritude movement, and published six books of poetry between 1964 and 1997. Craveirinha also wrote under the pseudonyms Mário Vieira, José Cravo, Jesuíno Cravo, J. Cravo, J.C., Abílio Cossa, and José G. Vetrinha.
This is a prize of USD 25,000 (twenty-five thousand US dollars), exclusively awarded by HCB, through the election of the jury, whose main objective is to distinguish Mozambicans by their merit and prominence in the literary work produced and / or in the dissemination and promotion of knowledge of Mozambican literature.
The award ceremony will be attended by the writer Filimone Meigos, main speaker, and Moreira Chonguiça, one of the musicians invited to brighten up the event.
On the same occasion, HCB will officially open the 7th edition of the Book Fair of Songo, an initiative supported by the Bibliographic Fund of Portuguese Language. By October 30 this year, the book fair will be open to the public from 08h00am to 18h00 offering a range of literature, science and technology books among other relevant areas, with discounts of 30% reimbursed by HCB.
