Film: Tangos, the Exile of Gardel
Tangos, the Exile of Gardel is an Argentine-French film released on 20 March 1986, directed by Fernando Solanas, starring Marie Laforêt, Miguel Ángel Solá and Philippe Leotard. The film was selected as the Argentine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 59th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.
The film is about a group of Argentinean dancers, exiled in Paris, due to the military coup of 1976, tries to maintain the connection to their culture by organising tango shows. It is the story that revolves around the group's essays and the living conditions of their elements. They are people who live in tiny apartments with precarious jobs, trying to deal with what they expect to be only temporary conditions of living in a foreign country. Highlight for the music of Astor Piazzolla who won the César for best music in 1986. Fernando Solanas won the grand jury special prize of the Venice Film Festival.
