An attack by armed men on a military escorted convoy injured two people in Ncondezi, Báruè district, central Mozambique, and caused damage to a passenger bus, witnesses have told Lusa.
“It was 3:52 p.m. on Monday and raining a little when shots fired from the bush hit the bus I was travelling in, lightly wounding two people,” Osvaldo Paunde, who witnessed the incident, told Lusa.
The bullets, Osvaldo continued, were made from six-millimetre construction rod and hit the Linhas Terrestrials de Mozambique (LTM) vehicle, damaging the engine head, as well as another passenger bus in the escorted column on the Catandica-Vanduzi section.
“The driver managed to get the bus out of the area of the attack, but could not reach Vanduzi,” said Rafaela Pensado, who was also travelling in the column.
The attack occurred in the area where government forces earlier this year blamed the armed wing of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), the main opposition party, for the appearance of a huge crater on the N7, one of the country’s principal highways.
Two attacks were registered at the same site last week, injuring six passengers lightly but without further significant damage, passengers and drivers reported.
The Manica Police have not yet reacted to the attack.
The central region of the country has been the scene of ambushes against civilian and military targets that the authorities attribute to the armed wing of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
Renamo demands to govern in six provinces where it claims victory in the general elections of 2014.
Government and opposition forces have been involved in clashes, while representatives of both sides have started a negotiating process in Maputo, still without results.
