On Sunday, eight Renamo men armed with firearms and knives, set fire to two houses and a barn three kilometres from the village of Muxúnguè, in Chibabava district in Sofala. Before burning the houses, the attackers stole 48 goat kids and 40,000 meticais from one of the victims, reports Diário de Moçambique.
The first house to be visited at about midnight by the men loyal to Afonso Dhlakama belonged to Francisco Matete, an employee of the Chibabava District Economic Services. Matete was working in the village of Muxúnguè.
Then they went to the house of Filipe Castigo, a local Frelimo member. In addition to reducing the houses to ashes, 11 kids died in Castigo’s animal pen after it was set on fire by the same individuals.
Confirming the incident, Sofala provincial police command spokesman Daniel Macuácua, said that immediately afterwards, Defence and Security Forces went to the locations are were still in pursuit of the criminals.
Macuácua said no-one was hurt in the incidents, the owners of the two houses having fled as soon as they became aware of the presence of the “armed bandits”.
“The situation remains calm and controlled, with the FDS on the ground to neutralise and hold the perpetrators accountable for the crimes committed,” he said.
This is not the first time Afonso Dhlakama’s men have been active in Muxúnguè. They killed the local traditional leader (Régulo) there earlier this year.
Two months ago, the house of neighbourhood secretary Alfredo Samucene Vilanculos was set on fire and he was shot in the abdomen after seeing his 13-year-old son burned to death in his sleep.
