A 10-year-old boy died when he was attacked by a crocodile on the banks of the Zambezi River in Tete province last weekend, and three other children are still missing after disappearing while swimming.
According to Tete police the boy met his death when he was bathing in the river in Tete city’s Matundo neighbourhood on a day of intense heat.
The area is the location of regular crocodile attacks, the victims getting water for various purposes or swimming when the river is low.
The fate of three children who went missing at about the same time is still unclear. One seven-year-old is assumed to have drowned when he went to cool off from the intense heat on the same day, and two other minors whose identities have not been disclosed also disappeared. None of the bodies has so far been found.
Tete city council says that drownings in the Zambezi River have been on the increase, especially among children who go there unaccompanied and without parental consent.
