The Municipal Council of Chimoio has invested 100 million meticais of its own funds (around US$1.5 million) in 20 new trucks for garbage collection and general maintenance.
Delivery was accompanied with song and dance by the citizens.
The reinforced city council fleet will improve garbage collection, a major challenge for most municipalities in the country.
“We work for the city of Chimoio, so that we can have our city in good shape, not only in the centre, but a little everywhere. The purchase of trucks is based on that – fortifying our endeavour to be a national and regional reference in Africa, with regard to working more and more for our citizens,” said Chimoio mayor João Ferreira.
Mayor Ferreira stressed that the funds for the purchase came from the city council itself.
“It is based on investment and public revenue that we are able to buy this equipment. Sometimes they say that some country is supporting us, but no. What we have done is to save. We don’t spend money on superfluous things. I use the same car as at the beginning of my term. So, we don’t need cars for ourselves, we need trucks so we can work, we need machines to be able to work for our citizens. We swore to serve, and that is what we are going to do,” Ferreira says.
Before acquiring these trucks, the Chimoio municipality had to rent vehicles to collect rubbish. Now, the new trucks will help the Municipal Council be much more efficient in the management of solid waste and other services.
In December 2021, Ferreira acquired 11 modern trucks at a cost of just over US$2 million.
