Weather Alert: Strong winds forecast for Maputo and Gaza provinces, southern Mozambique
The number of deaths after an attack of an unknown group in a remote village of Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, rose from 10 to 12, a local source said on Thursday.
According to the source, two new deaths have been registered, a woman and a 16-year-old teenager, at Pemba hospital, among the 15 who were injured and who were getting medical assistance after the attack.
The attack took place around 8 p.m. local time on Thursday in the Ntoni village, district of Macomia, in the central coast of Cabo Delgado.
The local sources described that the group was wearing military uniforms and starting shooting firearms, killing ten residents, besides injuring 15 other people and burning at least 30 houses.
On the same day, a group attacked a military patrol further north, near Pundanhar, district of Palma, and five soldiers in a patrol vehicle, among which an officer, died.
The last attack occurred on 8 September, also against a village in the Mucojo administrative post.
Unknown groups have been attacking remote villages in Cabo Delgado province since October 2017. These groups never made any claim nor said their intentions, but researchers suggest that trafficking networks of heroin, ivory, rubies and timber are linked to this violence.
These attacks are taking place at a time when investments are being made by oil and natural gas companies in the region, but the attackers have not entered the perimeter reserved for the enterprises.
