Some protected marine species are still captured illegally from the seas off Mozambique, the executive director of NGO Centro Terra Viva, Manuel Pereira, said on Tuesday.
“Sea turtles need attention because they continue to be used illegally. We have sharks that are under a lot of pressure and we need to look into it”, he said.
Manuel Pereira spoke on Tuesday in Maputo, at a meeting about marine conservation work done in Mozambique.
The executive director lamented that there were few technical, human and logistical resources to collect data and research, and to monitor and manage the little information collected.
The lack of resources in Mozambique does not allow the coverage and surveillance of the entire coast, which is over 2,000km long.
To overcome these constraints, the conservation areas are going to work with the communities to raise awareness of the importance of the resources around them, so it does not come only down to the formal conservation.
