The World Bank has approved US$47 million (EUR 44.5 million) support for the Mozambican government’s Forest Investment Project (MozFIP), a press statement from the bank reveals.
According to the statement released on Tuesday, the project is part of an effort to curb the rapid pace of deforestation in the country and create new livelihood opportunities for rural communities through improved forest and land management practices in specific areas of the country.
Mozambique has 40 million hectares of natural forests, of which almost 27 million hectares are productive forests, contributing more than US$300 million (EUR 284.1 million) to the gross domestic product in recent years.
Despite its enormous potential, the country’s natural forests are being destroyed at an annual rate of 0.35 percent per annum, representing an annual loss of nearly 140,000 hectares.
Some of the key results expected from the intervention include reducing greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation, increasing the number of hectares of protected and restored natural resources, and improving forest governance.
Increased access to finance for agriculture and forestry operatives and an increase in the number of rural households with access to land certificates are also anticipated.
The project was developed in collaboration with local and central government authorities, local communities, the private sector and civil society, the statement says. The project will benefit 163,000 families in Zambézia and Cabo Delgado provinces.
